MASTER IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Program objectives The Master in Public Affairs (MPA) of the School of Public Affairs is a one-year, full-time program for midcareer professionals with a minimum of 5-years professional experience. It is taught entirely in English. Depending on the student profile, the program can function as a career gateway, accelerator or professional breather. • A career gateway between two sectors whose borders are blurring: the public and private, the local and global, thought and practice. • A career accelerator for young professionals, in the public or private sector, seeking to increase their impact on the decision-making process. • A breather for professionals engaged in intense careers, who need to take a step back, to expand their vision and horizon before plunging back into the action. Program features The MPA offers rigorous academic content, specialized professional tools, as well as a rich and diverse environment, key elements for the discovery of new approaches, the confrontation of ideas and the cultivation of creativity. The program provides students with a solid foundation in the social sciences, giving them the tools to do in-depth analysis of public policies and the contexts in which they are implemented, and to effectively employ the various social sciences to build bridges between researchers, engineers, financiers, politicians and decision-makers. Students also have the opportunity to develop their management, communication and leadership skills. They participate in a policy lab exercise, which allows them to collaborate with School partners to co-develop and test innovative solutions to the public policy challenges of tomorrow. Finally, the program provides students with a rich understanding of the challenges which they already face, and will increasingly face in the future, as actors working for the common good. Career opportunities The program prepares students for a wide range of professional positions—political officer, civil servant (international, national or local), social entrepreneur, communications professional, researcher, consultant, manager, etc.—in a wide variety of fields: • Public and private: political and administrative officers and private sector executives (companies, consulting firms) working in close connection with the public sector, as well as social entrepreneurs, communications professionals, etc. • Local and international: the national level is no longer the only dimension of public policy. Graduates are thus prepared to work at all levels, from the local to the international, including the national, European and non-governmental. • Thought and practice: the program prepares students for careers as public policy researchers and thinkers as well as managers, from policy conception to implementation.
