Course validation : Take home papers + oral presentations by a group of 3 or 4 students (topic : development and status of nuclear energy in different countries in the world). This may be complemented by a short multiple choice test depending on circumstances. Workload : Thorough re-reading of the slides 20% ; Reading of circulated documents 10% ; Preparation of oral presentations 70%. Pedagogical method : For a typical 2 hours course : a lecture with slides (between an hour and an hour and a half), one or two movies (if applicable), and an open discussion. Course Description : This course provides a comprehensive technical background of nuclear energy and it gives its overall status in the world. This includes an overview of its historical development. It explores basic nuclear physics, in particular the ﬁssion process and it explains the reaction chain. On this basis, it describes how a nuclear reactor works. The water-cooled reactor design and operations are discussed. Other reactor lines are also addressed. Additional topics include the nuclear fuel cycle, the radioactive waste management, the environmental impact, the nuclear safety and security (including a review of past accidents). It addresses the events and forces that have inﬂuenced, and continue to inﬂuence, commercial nuclear power. In this frame, the non-proliferation issues are presented and discussed in details, as well as issues related to public opinion. Cross cutting issues such as the place of nuclear energy in energy mix and its role in the climate change are also dealt with. Economic aspects are presented and discussed as well. Applications, such as nuclear medicine, are also covered. This course will help political decision makers and executive managers involved in the nuclear energy industry or, more generally, in the energy ﬁeld to have a clear understanding of nuclear power and the challenges of tomorrow. The overall module of 12 weeks (12 courses of 2 hours) is shared between two teachers : Dominique Greneche who covers all technical aspects with 8 courses and Valérie Faudon with 4 courses who addresses cross-functional issues such as strategic approaches, economy, social perception, and medical applications of radiations. Prerequisite : There are no speciﬁc requirements but participants need to have an interest for a technical and business approach. A basic knowledge of Accounting (what is a balance Sheet, a Proﬁt & Loss account, how to calculate a taxable income), Proﬁtability analysis (Cash-Flow Table, Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return) and Strategy (PESTEL-STEEP analysis, SWOT matrix) is a plus.
