public and private actors (elected officials, administrations, public services, private companies, financial institutions, non-profit organizations and interested residents) and the resources they use (finance, management tools, quantitative and cartographic techniques, architecture, etc.). Orientation and specific features The two-year Master program provides a combination of academic coursework and practical professional training: • Academic coursework in the social sciences is required for all students, focusing on public policy, urban sociology, urban and regional economies, local legal and regulatory systems, as well as in connection with Sciences Po’s research program “Cities are Back in Town”. An academic track in “Urban Risks” is offered beginning in the first year. A dedicated research program is offered on a selective basis beginning in the second semester. • Practical professional training is provided in the first year through a team project commissioned by a local or regional authority, a private or public company, or an organization (students dedicate one and a half day per week to working on their projects), and, in the second year, through a personalized program of professional workshops and an extended internship, which help students gradually define their professional orientation. • In-depth methodological classes on statistics, management tools, mapping, quantitative and qualitative surveys, and documentary research are offered. • Site visits and two study trips in France and throughout Europe are offered to understand urban issues and meet the actors of the cities. The program relies on the support and intellectual, pedagogical and professional guidance of a highly motivated faculty (academics and practitioners) and team project mentors who are all connected to local, national and international networks. Finally, although this Master is oriented first and foremost toward France and Europe, it also integrates a wider international focus, preparing its graduates to pursue international professional careers. Career opportunities The Master trains young professionals for careers in strategy and operations at the municipal and regional level. Graduates are hired for a wide range of positions, in both the public and private sectors: local authorities, R&D departments and consulting firms working in France and internationally, property and development organizations, banks, real estate development companies, public works and construction companies, urban planning and development agencies, European and international institutions, and research centers. The domains in which graduates work include public policy, economic development, corporate regional strategy, urban organization and development, and social and sustainable development policies. Graduates go on to work in both operational positions as well as in fields that provide studies and expertise and even careers in research, since the Master might well lead students to pursue a doctoral dissertation. Finally, the Master also prepares students to sit civil service examinations.
