RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS IN SOCIOLOGY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE (MAJOR SOCIAL SCIENCES)

Pedagogical format : Lecture alone Course Description : This course is meant to provide a ﬁrst general approach to enunciating and solving problems in sociology and political science. It will discuss the way in which to frame a problem, ask a good research questions and how to look for answers. This will call for some elements of the theory of science, as well as understanding the importance of theory and causality. A second block will deal with the issue of measurement in responding to problems. It will demonstrate how to develop and how to interpret indicators. Thereby, we will pay attention to levels of measurement and provide examples from opinion surveys, questionnaires and textmining. The third and largest block will provide an introduction into the interpretation and analysis of data. It will introduce to descriptive statistics, graphs, correlation and simple and multiple regression. Required reading : to be deﬁned.
par with the United States by becoming an indispensable partner in the major intenational questions (Middle-East, Iran), to recover its exclusive inﬂuence in the forme USSR countries (Ukraine, Eastern Europe, Caucasus), to reorient its attention towards the Asia-Paciﬁc region, especially with China, access to the Mediterranean and the Paciﬁc, to contain the role of the OSCE and to limit the inﬂuence of the EU in Eastern Europe. The means to lead this ambitious foreign policy are ideological ("patchwork" of tsarist nationalism, soviet patriotism, Christian orthodoxy, "russianism" and "eurasianism"), political (Eurasian Union, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation with China and Central Asian countries), economic (the same EAU and SCO) and security (Collective Security Treaty Organisation - CSTO). But the use of these means, often inspired by the USSR or even the Russian Empire, does not seem to obey a predetermined strategy, but rather internal or external political considerations or simply the president's will. We can see that the limitation, due to the fall of the gas and oil prices, of ﬁnancial and economic ressources allocated to this foreign policy force those responsible to make difﬁcult choices or even unconsidered decisions.
