INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH CENTER FOR THE EVALUATION OF PUBLIC POLICY (LIEPP)
www.sciencespo.fr/liepp twitter: @LIEPP_ScPo Created in 2011, the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Evaluation of Public Policies (LIEPP) has been designated a Laboratory of Excellence (Labex) by the international selection committee of the ANR (French National Research Agency). Co-directed by Étienne Wasmer and Bruno Palier, the LIEPP focuses on the study and evaluation of public policy from an interdisciplinary perspective. The LIEPP has established six research groups to coordinate the work of its researchers around priority themes: • Discrimination and social inequality • Evaluation of democracy • Education policy • Social and fiscal policy • Healthcare policy • Research, higher education and innovation Interdisciplinarity is the defining feature of the Center’s work, which combines the efforts of seventy Sciences Po researchers and professors from four departments and research centers—the Sciences Po Department of Economics, the Center for European Studies (CEE), the Center for Organizational Sociology (CSO) and the Center for the Study of Social Change (OSC)—as well as affiliated jurists, historians and researchers from other universities. The LIEPP regularly hosts renowned visiting scholars and draws on the international research collaborations of its founding centers. The LIEPP also actively supports the development of future research capacity by recruiting young scholars as assistant professors in economics, political science and sociology. Training is another key component of the LIEPP’s work, and the Center makes significant contributions to Sciences Po’s efforts in this regard. It provides financial support for several doctoral students, selected on the basis of their academic performance and the relevance of their projects to the LIEPP’s areas of interest. These doctoral students are hosted at the Center’s facilities, in order to encourage interdisciplinary exchanges and to provide them with related research supervision, in addition to that provided by their principal research center. In collaboration with the Sciences Po Executive Education Division, the LIEPP also organizes training sessions in the evaluation of public policy for public sector administrators and other interested professionals. Research conducted at the LIEPP results in numerous academic conferences and publications of various kinds, all of which are available online: a series of working papers and reports, policy briefs (4 to 8 page summaries), methodological discussion notes (between two researchers in different disciplines), policy books (comprehensive accounts of the debate on a specific issue) and policy debates (overviews of the different academic positions on a given point of evaluation). The LIEPP receives public funding from the ANR as part of its Investments for the Future program (ANR-11LABX-0091 & ANR-11-IDEX-0005-02).
