Programme objectives Economics is one of the core disciplines at Sciences Po. It is taught beginning in the Undergraduate College by a world-class faculty, enabling students to study and understand the allocation mechanisms of scarce resources. The Doctoral program in Economics at Sciences Po, which draws primarily on the resources of the Department of Economics, is today one of top programs in Europe, as evidenced by the recent hiring of our graduates by leading universities (UCLA, ENS Paris, HEC Paris, Carlos III). It trains world-class economists for academic careers in France and abroad, as well as for careers requiring doctoral training at the highest level: international organizations, think tanks, research institutes, government ministries, banks, and insurance companies. Students seeking to pursue international academic careers will be advised throughout the job market experience, with trainings in written and oral expression, and preparation for interviews and seminars by members of the Department of Economics. Orientation and specific features Doctoral students are affiliated to the Department of Economics, through which they are provided with a workspace and the best conditions for completing their dissertations. They are directed in their research by a primary supervisor, a professor in the Department of Economics. Their dissertation committee is composed of their supervisor and two other professors. Through seminars, doctoral workshops and the program’s academic events, doctoral students participate fully in the life of the Department of Economics. Doctoral students are also in regular contact with a large number of visiting faculty. The program admits only a small number of applicants, ensuring that each student receives a maximum of support and individualized attention, guaranteeing their success. The Doctoral program in Economics is intended to be completed in three years. Applicants who do not already hold a Master’s degree must apply to the Master’s program in Economics. These students will receive a Master in Economics degree from Sciences Po at the end of their second year, and will then be able to apply to the Doctoral program. Applicants already holding a research master’s degree from Sciences Po or from another top university may apply directly to the Doctoral program. During the three years dedicated to the dissertation, doctoral students are hosted by the Department of Economics. They also have the opportunity to study abroad at one of Sciences Po’s partner universities, including Princeton, the University of Chicago and the London School of Economics. The department organizes a student seminar at which students are invited to present their work. Students also participate in the various seminars organized by the department.
