Pedagogical Format : Lecture and tutorials Senior lecturers : Miquel DE LA ROSA LORENTE (PhD. Teaching fellow), Anatole LE BRAS (PhD student), Meha PRIYADARSHINI (PhD. Teaching Fellow), Alisa SHABLOVSKAIA (PhD student). Course validation : One third of the total grade for the course consists of the result of the Final Exam (33%). The other two thirds of the overall grade consist of grades obtained for work performed in the context of the discussion sections (conférences de méthode) : 66%. This 66% is in turn a composite mark for four separate items : - Oral class presentation (25%) ; - General student participation in the discussion section, including quizzes during the conférences de méthode (25%) ; - The mid-term exam (galop d'essai) (25%) ; - Research paper of 1.250-word length (25%). Pedagogical Method : The organization backbone of the course consists of weekly two-hour lectures and a weekly two-hour tutorial meeting with extensive student participation. Each week, students also prepare for the lecture by reading the relevant chapters from the mandatory reading list in advance of the lecture. The tutorials, which will normally take place after the lecture, will further address various aspects of the material covered in each week. Students will also develop individual and/or group presentations in accordance with the guidelines for such presentations explained by the individual group tutor. Course Description : The goal of the course is to present the history of twentieth century Europe and Asia by means of a carefully selected choice of topics. The opening session of the course will address the decline of traditional empires, which characterized world history in the course of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. The ﬁnal session of the course will bring the material up to the present. The view presented is thus a ‘long view' of the twentieth century. The course is aiming to present a comparative and transnational view of twentieth century history in Europe and Asia. Both Eastern and Western Europe will receive roughly equal exposure, given the contemporary relevance of competing social
systems on either side of the former ‘iron curtain'. Asia will receive roughly equal exposure compared to the material presented in both readings and lectures on the two halves of Europe. There will be a distinct emphasis on the history of East and Southeast Asia. Pedagogical Format : Workshop Course validation : Credits will be awarded to students depending on their degree of production and participation to the course ; Pedagogical Method : The class will start with a general introduction after which students will conduct their own experiments and receive individual attention and advice depending on the proﬁciency level displayed. Course Description : From Gutenberg to serigraphy : a practical and fun approach of typographical printing, wood blocks, metal types, serigraphy. The three months certiﬁcate course allows students to explore various printmaking techniques such as woodcuts, serigraphy, photocopy and monotype. The workshop favours an experimental approach of the various matrixes (wood, metal, screens) and media (inks). In this introductory process, students will also experiment with different transfer surfaces, such as paper or textiles (teeshirts).
