MASTER OF EXPERIMENTATION ON ARTS AND POLITICS (SPEAP)

Program objectives Founded by Bruno Latour in 2011, Speap is an innovative multidisciplinary program, which brings together the social sciences, the arts, and politics. This program, offered by the School of Public Affairs, provides twenty or so young graduates each year with high-level training in the social sciences and the arts, through lectures and conferences by internationally renowned specialists. In addition, students are given the opportunity to work out their methods, tools, and intellectual frameworks through team projects that deal with real-world challenges, in response to outside commissions. The program places considerable emphasis on this kind of hands-on exercise, which takes up a large part of the year. Program features The training is organized around four types of activities: • Core courses: these courses take up fundamental concepts in philosophy, political science, history of science, and art history, but are above all designed to provide students with an introduction to emerging ﬁelds (philosophy of the environment, scientiﬁc and technical debates, etc.) and study the linkages and articulations between the various ﬁelds of science, art, and politics. The teaching, even when dealing with the most theoretical subjects, remains fundamentally orientated to practice, and takes the form of hands-on projects, writing exercises, group visits, and other means of enabling real experimentation. • Master classes: major ﬁgures from the intellectual and artistic world bring their knowledge and know-how to Sciences Po for day-long sessions working with students on their projects. • Workshops: run by Sciences Po faculty, these workshops allow participants to explore various methods drawn from both the social sciences and artistic practice (writing, oratory, surveys, forms, etc.), through a range of practical exercises. • Studios: the studio is both the space and the pedagogical form of project development. Drawing on the methods of architecture and design schools, studio work is collective, practical and modular. Students work in groups on their studio projects throughout the year. Informed by real-world issues, these projects respond to commissions from companies, institutions, organizations, and individuals. At the end of the semester (early July), each group makes a public presentation of their project. Project presentations have both oral and material components (models, mock-ups, photos, texts, videos, etc.) and are presented before a jury of teachers, experts, and sponsors. The presentation is a required exercise for completing the degree, but this in no way precludes continuing work on the project after the end of the program. Indeed, all or part of the project may be subsequently taken up in a professional context, i.e. exhibited, published, or otherwise developed beyond Sciences Po.
