Keeping the grid in balance
As more electricity is generated from both decentralized and intermittentsolarandwindenergy,there isagrowingneedforflexibilitiesand smart energy management in order to keep the mandatory permanent balanceofenergysupplyanddemand. When the sun shines or the wind blowsplentyofelectricityisproduced, butthisdoesn’talwayscoincidewith consumerdemand.Asaconsequence, reversepowerflowsmayputlowand mediumvoltagegridstotheirlimitsof hostingrenewables.inaddition,the highvariabilityofgenerationplaces stresses on the grid, which needs to respond dynamically to changing levelsofsupplyanddemandtomaintainhigh-qualitypowertoconsumers. Smart grids integrate advanced iT solutions to monitor and control powerflows.Yet,theadditionalflexibilities,neededforperiodsofminutes, hours and sometimes several days, havetobeprovidedeitherbyflexible generation or by flexible consumption.Bothofthemhavetheirtechnical and economic limits. This is where energystoragecomesintothepicture asafourthassetclassinourenergy system*, enabling effective, localizedprovisionofbalancingservicesto ensurethegridremainsinbalance. Saft has developed commercializedsolutionsand is continuing to improve its solutionsandinnovate th tomeetthesenew demands, and is involved in some o f t h e w o r l d ’ s biggest trials of newstoragetechnology. Oneoftheseisamegawatt-scale lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storageprojectforFortum,theFinnish energy company. A Saft intensium® Maxcontainerizedbatterysystem,with anominaloutputof2MWand1megawatthour(MWh)ofenergycapacity,is beinginstalledatFortum’sSuomenoja powerplantaspartofthelargest-ever electricitystoragepilotprojectinthe nordicregion. Saftalsoprovidedthecontainerizedbatterysolutionsforalargepilot projectinFrance,knownasVenteea, andbeingrunforgridoperatorenedis. Theprojectincludesdynamicvoltage regulation tools, as well as a 2 MW capacitybatterystorage solution, located on a wind farm in eastern France (Aube). The latest results show that the system helps to bring network efficiency with a better renewableenergyintegration in the distribution network. The energy storage system is providing a bouquet of 12 different services to multiple stakeholders, including frequency regulation qualified by FrenchTSORTe.Andthekeytothis is real-time monitoring and control backedbyhigh-capacitystorage. email@example.com
