The work we are presenting today depicts two young Asian women seated on the floor, partaking in tea. The composition revolves around the way in which their graceful bodies occupy the picture plane, their limbs’ curves and the the fabrics’ sinuous lines create masterly visual echoes. One of the young women directs her gaze and the beholder while her companion daringly turns her back. The subtle application of solid areas of harmonious colors as well as their creamy texture are characteristic features of Mai Thu’s art. Recurring neutral, monochrome backgrounds, empty spaces without any contextual components such as decor or furniture, permit his compositions to be entirely centered on the figures and their occupations. This purified art form of concentrated sobriety, which is characteristic of Mai Thu’s manner, allows him to draw attention to scenes of everyday Vietnamese life, which he wished to share with his western audience. Subjects such as the one we are presenting reveal a certain form of nostalgia he felt for his home culture, the refined essences of which he hoped to render in his works. Finally, the precious nature of Tea stems from the picture’s subtle harmony with its frame, to which Mai Thu paid much attention. An inherent part of his works, the painter indeed created his own frames, from mounts to window mats. Seeking to create complete art works, of which each component contributes to their beauty, Mai Thu added decorative, geometric, floral, or symbolic motifs such as the yin and yang symbol tàiji tù here, to his frames. In the end, he patinated the wood and applied gold or silver leaf in order to bestow his creations with enriched refinement.
