Produced from November 1967 to March 1971, the Mercedez-Benz 280 SL owes its nickname “Pagoda” to its lovely hard top and the elegant design crafted by the French designer Paul Bracq. Its sharp, modern lines brought to it a touch of nobility, and the performance of its straight-six engine made it an automotive icon in the 1970s and make it a major classic today! In between the exclusive Mercedes 300 SL, which forged the SL legend in the world of Mercedes, and the “small” four-cylinder Mercedes 190 SL, a perfectly positioned model was missing from the manufacturer’s line up. Made in both 230 and 250 versions, it was the new straight-six, 2.8-litre fuel-injected engine model of the 280 SL sedan that the Pagoda finds its best expression, and it is the exact model, painted in the original metallic grey, that we are offering. Originally from France, the car was delivered new to a woman in Valence, a city in the South of France where she passed a large part of her life. At the end of the 1980s, the car passed into the hands of its second owner who had important work done on the car in order to use it regularly. Its engine was completely restored and, in compliance with its origins, the body was meticulously repainted with the 180 Silbergrau metallic colour that it wore when it first rolled out of the factory. Today the car is still in great condition and the interior contains all original material. The well-maintained black seats and the grey carpets perfectly complement the rest of the car. The dashboard and woodwork, important details, are in good condition. It comes with a rare four-speed manual transmission and the optional small rear bench seat can accommodate a third passenger. It offers handling and a driving experience that few cars of the era can claim. Well known by the Mercedes-Benz Club of Belgium, since 2003 it has been in the north of France where it has been taken on regular Franco/Belgian tours. It has always been well maintained and undergone numerous major tune-ups that included changing the shocks, the suspension and the brakes, as well as the drive shaft and CV joints. Seals and hoses were also replaced as well as the injectors. Including the custom stainless steel trim work, a bit more than € 10,000 was put into this car in order to put it into great mechanical order. It is sold with its original hard top so its future owner will have the choice of driving with the top down or making it into one of the most elegant coupés on the road. Rare in this price range, especially since it comes with a manual transmission, this 280 SL is a great chance to acquire a reliable car with a timeless design that can still be used day to day!
