At the start of the 1950s, the Mercedes range did not have a sports convertible and the American importer, the famous Max Hoffman, complained to the manufacturer. His pressure brought about the presentation of a prototype at the 1954 New York Motor Show, alongside the 300 SL Gullwing coupé. The car was so well received that Mercedes decided to put it into production and the final version of the model was launched at the Geneva Motor Show the following year. With her very elegant shape adapted from that of her more powerful big sister, she is comfortable, well equipped, reliable and well built. Attracting affluent buyers, this model was the forerunner of a long line of Mercedes convertibles. The 190 SL on offer, first sold in the USA, was given a thorough restoration in 2011 by the Euro Classic Auto Restoration specialist company in California. Since then she has only covered 2 400 km. Her original white paintwork has been exchanged for a very beautiful new colour “Feuerwehr Rot», which has been very skilfully applied. The interior has been extensively upholstered in beautifully crafted beige leather. All the carpets are new, the instruments and controls have all been comprehensively refurbished and the Becker radio has a Smartphone connector in the glovebox. The spare wheel and jack are present. After being purchased by a French enthusiast with a large collection of classic cars, the vehicle was given a major service in his own workshops. All fluids and filters were changed and the car spent 80 hours in the workshop, where everything was carefully checked over, before it was concluded that no particular work was needed. The starter motor is of an upgraded type and the engine, gearbox and clutch are all in first rate working order. All potential weak points have been systematically debugged since the restoration, thus ensuring maximum reliability. In fact, everything is so new on this Mercedes 190 SL that one could almost think that it is a modern car. The next owner will therefore have complete confidence in setting off to enjoy long trips of open air motoring.
