Fifty Years of Family
One can’t know Conair without knowing the family behind the company. Julian Rizzuto must have had an adventurous spirit and a lot of self-confidence to leave home behind and move to a new world. The youngest of eleven boys, he began his adventure of a lifetime in the early 1900s, setting off from Giuliana, Italy, a small town in Sicily. Julian celebrated his seventeenth birthday on board ship, and arrived soon after in New York City. He came through Ellis Island, as so many thousands of people had before him, and would after him.

Julian was a handsome young man, meticulously groomed and dressed. He took a job as a barber and worked hard; he was eager to learn English and make his way in America. Not too long after arriving in New York, and just in his early twenties, a friend introduced him to a beautiful young woman, who, like himself, had come to Brooklyn from Sicily. One can only imagine his pleasure at finding Josephine Rizzo. Lovely inside and out, the woman who would become his wife was a hairdresser, spoke to him in his own language, and the rest, as they say, is history! Italy is a beautiful country and the Italians are beautiful people…and Julian and Josephine made beauty their business. The couple opened a spacious hair
